The meeting was called to order by the Chair at 12:03 p.m.

    That the minutes from the June 12, 2023 meeting of the Heritage Guelph Committee, be approved.

Jack Mallon, Heritage Planner, presented 131 Ontario Street Heritage Attributes and Designation Recommendation.

The following delegate spoke on the item: 
Ruchika Angrish, Upper Grand District School Board, provided comments on the collaboration work that has been ongoing with Heritage staff on this item. 
Owen Scott, CHC Limited, present to answer questions.

    THAT Heritage Guelph supports the heritage attributes identified for 131 Ontario Street as outlined in the staff report dated July 10, 2023; and

    THAT Heritage Guelph recommends that City Council give notice of its intention to designate 131 Ontario Street pursuant to Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act

Jack Mallon, Heritage Planner, presented 49 Metcalfe Street cultural heritage evaluation report. Committee members provided the following comments:

  • Consider including examples in the report of other buildings Dario Pagani completed over the course of his career located in the City of Guelph.

    THAT the comments provided by Heritage Guelph members on the '49 Metcalfe Street: Cultural Heritage Evaluation Report’ be provided to staff and Council for their consideration.

Victoria Nagy, Heritage Planner, presented the 211 Silvercreek Parkway cultural heritage evaluation report. Committee members provided the following comments:

  • Clarify the involvement of John Sleeman as Chairman of Sleeman Breweries Ltd., even after its sale in 2010; and
  • Provided the anecdote that Henry Sleeman and family were smuggling alcohol to Al Capone specifically in 1933 when Sleeman Brewing lost its brewing license.

    THAT the comments provided by Heritage Guelph members on the '211 Silvercreek Parkway: Cultural Heritage Evaluation Report’ be provided to staff and Council for their consideration.
