Elyssa Pompa,Policy Planner II, will be leading the project management of the Downtown Guelph HCD Study. Rebecca Sciarra, Partner and Principal Heritage Specialist, ASI, and Kristina Martens, Senior Cultural Heritage Specialist, ASI, delivered a presentation on the Downtown Heritage Conservation District project update. The following questions and comments from the Committee were received: Questions Were businesses consulted during the study phase? Has this process mirrored the previous heritage district studies in the City? Did you consider the area bounded by Woolwich, Norfolk, and Yarmouth? Is the HCD process integrated into the downtown revitalization project? Why does the boundary not go right up to the river? Why are the bridges not included in the boundary? Can you explain the inclusion of the northeast corner? Comments Area bounded by Norfolk, Woolwich, and Yarmouth contains many heritage properties that blend commercial and residential buildings and would fit into the heritage district. The east side of Norfolk between Quebec and Woolwich is part of the downtown. The East side of Norfolk is where downtown begins. The area bounded by Woolwich, Norfolk, and Yarmouth is considered by many people in Guelph to be part of the downtown. The East side of Norfolk feels more commercial than residential, most of those buildings are now businesses. The street plan to the west and southwest of Norfolk the streets are residential and not mixed use like the East side of Norfolk. The intersection of Norfolk, Woolwich, and Norwich is the transitional zone where you enter downtown. It does not make sense to dissect one side of Yarmouth from the other. The inclusion of the farmer’s market and the surrounding area is a great acknowledgement of Guelph agricultural history. 3.Chair and Staff Announcements Staff announcements: Jack Mallon, Heritage Planner, thanked Victoria Nagy, Heritage Planner, for all her work and wished her farewell in her new role.
